Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Are you someone that only wears 20% of the clothes in your wardrobe, and always think there is nothing to wear? Or is your wardrobe so overloaded that you don’t even know what choices you have? Creating a capsule wardrobe might be one of the great solution that can help you.

What is a capsule wardrobe? It’s using a minimum amount of garments to create a maximum number of outfits. In a way, it is about how to mix and match.  I’m not a minimalist, but I like to have minimal approach when it comes to a wardrobe. I always strive to maximize my wardrobe potential by finding different ways to mix and match.

Do you do that already? Or do you generally have only 1 or 2 ways to wear a garment?

Here is an example of a client who thought she had nothing to wear. She found her wardrobe quite boring, and she wanted to do some shopping after her colour consultation.

I suggested to do a wardrobe planning session before heading to the shops. We first went through what she has for the season. She had in fact quite a big number of black garments, and she normally put together an outfit like in first picture below, in full black.  There is nothing wrong, but it doesn’t show her charm.

She is feminine, sharp, funny, lively and full of energy. She owns a lot of lace items too, but she doesn’t know how to wear them. But guess what I found, she has 20 pairs of different colour high heels, many colourful purses and scarves! Further, it turned out that many of those items have colours matching her colour palette.

In the pictures below you can see nine different outfits I put together for her, with combinations she never tried before. She was so happily surprised that there are so many ways to mix and match. Suddenly she felt like she had a new wardrobe, with many new looks she could create.🥰

  • You really don’t need many clothes to look great. Before you shop again, maximize what you already have.
  • Don’t only look at the most obvious ones, also take into account accessories like scarfs, jewelleries, hats, purses, bags, belts, watches, shoes, brooch’s, etc.
  • Once you know your style & colour, you will learn to be able to filter fashion sales information and know what to choose as the right thing for you. It will save you time and money, and shopping will become much more enjoyable.

In the video below you see another example of me wearing the same cardigan in 12 different ways. Perhaps this also gives you some inspiration.
